A groundbreaking study released by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has revealed that a daily 40-minute yoga routine, incorporating select asanas and pranayama, can reduce the risk of developing Type-2 diabetes by approximately 40% in prediabetic individuals.
The study, titled “Yoga and Prevention of Type 2 Diabetes – The Indian Prevention of Diabetes Study”, was conducted by the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) and published in the esteemed journal Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research and Reviews.
The study, involving nearly 1,000 prediabetic participants over three years at five centers across India, significantly outperformed other diabetes prevention strategies like lifestyle interventions (28% risk reduction) and medication-aided trials (32% reduction).
Highlighting these findings, Dr. Singh stated, “This study is a potential game changer for India’s healthcare system, offering an evidence-based, scalable solution to tackle the diabetes epidemic.”
With India grappling with over 101 million diabetes cases and 136 million prediabetic individuals, the study underscores yoga’s transformative potential as a cost-effective, sustainable, and culturally rooted preventive tool. Dr. Singh urged the integration of yoga into national health policies to maximize its public health impact.
This first-of-its-kind trial scientifically validates yoga’s role in modern medicine, marking a pivotal moment for evidence-based approaches to diabetes prevention.
