A 38-year-old man from Malappuram district in Kerala tested positive for Mpox after returning from the UAE, announced Kerala Health Minister Veena George.

On noticing symptoms, the patient proactively self-isolated with responsible public health behaviour. He has been quarantined and is currently undergoing treatment at Manjeri Medical College in Malappuram.

Health surveillance has been stepped up at airports, with people coming from affected areas urged to declare symptoms. All medical colleges have treatment and isolation facilities set up, protocols are strictly followed in both government and private hospitals.

This marks the second Mpox case in India this year. The WHO has declared MPXV a public health emergency. It is generally transmitted through close contact and symptoms of infection include fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes. Many cases are self-limiting, lasting 2-4 weeks, but require supportive care and may lead to complications.
