In a decisive move to protect patient safety, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), East Zone, and the Drugs Control Directorate, West Bengal, have jointly seized a large quantity of potentially spurious anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and other medications from a wholesale premises in Kolkata. The confiscated drugs, estimated to be worth approximately ₹6.60 crore, were discovered during a raid at M/s Care and Cure For You.
“The drugs, labelled as being manufactured in various countries including Ireland, Turkey, USA, and Bangladesh, were found without any supporting documents to prove their legitimate importation into India. In the absence of such documentation, these drugs are deemed to be spurious.”
According to the Union Health Ministry, the investigation also revealed a stash of empty packing materials, raising serious concerns over the authenticity of the seized products. Samples have been sent for quality testing, while the remaining batch is under safe custody of the CDSCO.
Meanwhile, the proprietor of the wholesale firm, a woman has been arrested and placed in judicial custody for 14 days. Further interrogation and investigations are underway. This swift enforcement action underscores the government’s zero-tolerance policy toward counterfeit pharmaceuticals, a crucial step in safeguarding both clinicians and patients from substandard or fraudulent products.
For medical practitioners, this bust is a timely reminder to remain vigilant about the sources and supply chains of essential drugs, especially those used in critical care. The Ministry assures doctors and other healthcare providers that it will continue to work closely with state authorities to stem the circulation of spurious medications and maintain high standards of patient care.
