The Indian Health Ministry announced on Friday that it is closely monitoring the recent reports of a Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China, assuring that there is no cause for alarm.
Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Atul Goel stated, "There is nothing to be alarmed about the present situation." He highlighted that an analysis of December 2024 respiratory outbreak data in India revealed no significant increase or large-scale cases reported from medical institutions.
Dr. Goel emphasized the importance of adhering to standard precautions to prevent the spread of respiratory infections. He advised that individuals with coughs or colds should avoid close contact with others and use distinct handkerchiefs or towels to minimize transmission.
Meanwhile, China has downplayed reports of a severe flu outbreak, indicating that this winter's respiratory disease cases are less severe compared to the previous year. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning assured that it is safe for foreigners to travel to China, stating, "I can assure you the Chinese government cares about the health of Chinese citizens and foreigners in China. It is safe to travel in China."
The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) under the Union Health Ministry continues to monitor respiratory and seasonal influenza cases, maintaining communication with international health agencies.
