In a landmark development for cardiac care, the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in Delhi Cantonment has performed India’s first-ever Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation with the HeartMate 3 device in a government institution. The successful procedure was conducted on a 49-year-old patient who had been awaiting a heart transplant for over two years.
“The LVAD, often regarded as a ‘mechanical heart’, serves as a life-saving bridge for patients with end-stage heart failure,” officials said.
The HeartMate 3 LVAD employs advanced technology to support and improve heart function. This device not only stabilizes patients awaiting transplants but can also serve as a long-term support for those ineligible for immediate transplantation.
According to the surgical team, the patient is currently recovering well under close medical supervision. They highlight that this breakthrough underscores the Army Hospital (R&R)’s commitment to offering cutting-edge treatments and reaffirms its reputation as a leader in high-level medical interventions.
The collaborative efforts of cardiology, cardiac surgery, and critical care departments were instrumental in the success of this procedure, demonstrating the value of multidisciplinary teamwork.
